Repairs are underway at the Poundmaker School after it was shut down last week over health issues.

Band councillor Colby Tootoosis says hydrogen sulphide was coming up from a dentist’s office in the school and people were getting sick.

“There’s like a room, it’s a dental room and it’s near the office and there’s a sink on the other side of that room, and there’s like some kind of suction that’s allowing the smell to come through on the other side.”

Repairs will be made there.

Other work is being done too, but Tootoosis says that’s not enough.

He says the health issues highlight other problems, like a report which said school maintenance workers didn’t have the expertise to maintain the school.

A public meeting is being held at 7:00 p.m. tonight at the community hall to discuss forming an independent school authority.
