MBC Network Radio was established in 1983 to inform, entertain and engage Saskatchewan’s Indigenous population and now reaches almost everywhere in the province. After two decades with MBC, our News Director is leaving the position and we have an immediate opening for an individual to take on this significant role with our network. This is a full-time position with group insurance benefits (100% company-paid), a pension plan and above industry standard vacation time. MBC is Saskatchewan’s Indigenous FM radio network heard in over 65 communities, including Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Yorkton, La Ronge and Meadow Lake. MBC News is also online, all the time, at www.mbcradio.com.

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the News Director will ensure the overall quality of radio and digital news and ensure it meets or exceeds the demands of our audience. The integrity of our news content on all platforms is a key factor in the success of our network. The successful applicant will oversee the MBC newsroom and will guide/mentor a team consisting of five experienced reporters and three current affairs program hosts.

About the Role:

  • Monday through Friday work schedule consisting of developing story ideas, assigning coverage of stories, news anchoring, digital media contributions and occasional voice tracking.
  • In-person and over the telephone interviews.
  • Regular air checks of hosts and anchors to further develop their talent.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with key community and regional leaders.
  • Being a part of planning meetings and contributing ideas and solutions.

What we need from you:

  • The ability to gather and broadcast information in a timely manner with an emphasis on balance and accuracy.
  • A strong on-air delivery.
  • Computer proficiency with knowledge of KLZ Newsroom, KLZ Remote, ENCO DAD, Audacity, Microsoft Office and WordPress an asset.
  • Audio editing skills and an ability to extract relevant actualities from your interviews and record voicers.
  • Organized, punctual, reliable and positive.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • A willingness to relocate to Saskatchewan.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of a multi-location newsroom.
  • Cover daily news (and occasionally sports) casts.
  • Coach and Mentor the news team and current affairs program hosts.
  • Sourcing interesting story concepts and generating new story ideas each day.
  • Cover regional news events with an emphasis on Indigenous affairs and northern matters.
  • Continually exploring advanced methods for news gathering and delivery improvement opportunities.
  • Manage the news department consistent with MBC policies, philosophy and journalistic integrity.


Position Requirements:

  • Professionally trained in radio broadcasting or a degree in journalism.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Must be a self-motivated, detail-oriented, energetic self-starter able to accept direction.
  • A good listener and lead by example.
  • Can make decisions, implement change, have the ability to reason and react quickly.
  • The ability to work within a network environment.
  • Work independently and efficiently to meet required deadlines.
  • Proficiency with audio gathering and clip preparation/editing with capacity to troubleshoot minor computer difficulties.
  • You understand the importance of gathering multimedia (video, pictures, audio) to convey a more interesting and interactive story – on-air and on social media/digital platforms.
  • Social media literate and recognize the need to distribute content and repurpose on-air stories for our online audience.
  • Understanding of Indigenous culture and issues relevant to First Nations and Métis Peoples is an asset.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

News Reporter (Saskatoon, SK)

We are looking for our next news reporter. This is a full-time position with benefits (100% company-paid). If you have a passion for current events and a desire to provide accurate, timely and relevant information, then this is the opportunity for you!

MBC is Saskatchewan’s Indigenous FM radio network and you can hear us in over 65 communities, including Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Yorkton, La Ronge and Meadow Lake. We are also online, all the time, at www.mbcradio.com. Saskatoon is Saskatchewan’s largest city with a population of over 260,000. MBC is looking for someone who is versatile, professional and has great news sense.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working from a home-based office, the Saskatoon news reporter would be required to:

  • Provide broadcast-ready and new (online) media written story submissions with audio clip segments and photos.
  • Ensure stories are factual, current and aired quickly and accurately.
  • Inform MBC’s News Director of any major breaking story.
  • Sourcing interesting story concepts and generating new story ideas each day.
  • Develop news (and occasionally sports) stories as assigned.
  • Be available to update MBC News online and social media feeds with the latest stories.
  • Conduct and edit audio news (and occasionally sports) interviews, write scripts and present the finished product in a timely and professional manner.
  • Cover local news (and occasionally sporting) events with reporting on the scene or live as needed.
  • Develop stories, investigating and researching a broad range of issues.
  • Be available for any major event at any time as determined by the News Director.
  • Prepare all submissions according to station format, style, content and philosophy.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must be professionally-trained in broadcasting and preferably possess at least one year of radio newsroom or related experience or hold a degree in journalism.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and organization skills, including excellent knowledge of social media.
  • A strong sense of community news and local involvement.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently to meet frequent deadlines.
