Carry the Kettle First Nation is calling on the Saskatchewan and federal governments, along with Bell Canada, to pause a proposed AI data centre project near Regina.
In a statement released Monday, the First Nation said it has concerns about the project’s potential impacts on Treaty rights, water, land, wildlife and surrounding communities.
The Nation is calling for an environmental assessment and what it describes as meaningful consultation before the project moves forward, arguing a development of that scale should not proceed without further review.
“We have written to the Government of Saskatchewan and will be reaching out to Canada. This is beyond irresponsible. There is limited water in our area – our people raise cattle, so do our neighbours. We see drought conditions. We have an aquifer under our reserve to protect. We don’t know where the water is coming from and we don’t understand the impacts. All we hear are media reports of governments effectively asking our people to ‘just trust us’. This is not enough. Our Nation will stand firm in protecting our land and our Treaty,” said Chief Cliff Thomson.
Carry the Kettle First Nation says it will continue advocating for the protection of its land, water and Treaty rights while seeking consultation and accommodation on the project.
This is the second First Nation to issue a letter regarding the AI Data Centre’s being built in Saskatchewan, last week Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation posted their letter to the CEO of Bell requesting more information.
