Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation is calling on Bell Canada to provide detailed information about its AI data centre project under construction in the RM of Sherwood and a proposed expansion of the facility.
In a letter dated Oct. 2, Standing Buffalo Chief Roger Redman says the Nation requires technical, environmental and approval documents to conduct its own independent assessment of the project.
The Nation maintains the project is being built within its traditional Dakota territory and says it wants information on environmental studies, permits, groundwater monitoring, waste management, emissions, equipment disposal and consultation records.
The letter also requests clarification on environmental assessment requirements and how potential impacts on Indigenous rights will be addressed.
Standing Buffalo says it respects agreements Bell has reached with other First Nations but wants to review the project independently before determining its position.
The Nation has asked Bell to acknowledge the request within 10 business days and provide a substantive response within 30 days.
