The 2025 President’s Cup Fundraising Classic has an important change in the plans, according to the First Nations University of Canada, proceeds from this year’s tournament will be put towards assisting First Nations fire recovery and evacuation operations, as well as emergency bursary money for FNUniv students impacted by the fires, in response to the intensifying wildfire disaster impacting First Nations communities within Saskatchewan.
The fundraiser was originally intended to generate funds for the construction of FNUniv’s new Northern Campus, the fundraising effort has changed its focus to support students, families, and communities who are dealing with trauma, property loss, and displacement as a result of the continuing wildfires.
“In times like these, we are reminded of our responsibility to act with compassion and unity,” said Dr. Jacqueline Ottmann, President of the First Nations University of Canada. “This shift in focus is necessary to support our students and their families who are facing unimaginable hardship. We are committed to walking alongside our communities and being there when they need us most.”
A Call to Stand Together
In addition to disrupting with daily living, wildfires have caused widespread evacuations and state-of-emergency declarations, which have affected many FNUniv students’ academic pursuits. Yet some others are struggling financially as a result of travel, short-term relocation, or salary loss, while others have lost their houses. This year’s President’s Cup proceeds will help support the recovery efforts of the larger community while also giving students the critical support they need to continue their studies in spite of these obstacles.
“We recognize that our original goal—supporting the construction of a new Northern Campus—remains critically important for our students,” added Gord Hunchak, Vice President of University Relations at FNUniv. “However, when the students and communities we serve are in crisis, we must act.”
If the fire situation improves drastically before the event date, the university may consider returning to its original fundraising plan. However, FNUniv’s leadership will continue to monitor the situation and prioritize support where it is needed most.
