The man accused in a fatal assault that took place on a Carrot River-area reserve in early 2016 has been committed to stand trial.
Caleb Head, now 24, was the subject of an arrest warrant in April, after RCMP were called in response to an assault on Red Earth Cree Nation.
When Mounties arrived, they found a victim outside a home on the reserve; she was suffering from life-threatening injuries. The victim, 22-year-old Alyssa Nawakayas, was taken by ambulance to Nipawin’s hospital and then she was airlifted to Saskatoon.
Police deployed police dogs and other resources to find Head, and he was arrested three days later for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public. Mounties said Head and Nawakayas were known to each other.
Nawakayas died from her injuries five days later and Head was charged with second-degree murder.
Nawakayas had been living in Prince Albert and in the process of upgrading her education in order to pursue nursing at the time of her death, according to her obituary. She had two children.
“Alyssa will always be remembered for her loving smile and most of all her unending generosity, laughter and friendliness,” the obituary reads.
Head has been in custody since April and will remain in custody heading into his pre-trial dates, which have not yet been set.
If a resolution is not found in the pre-trial phase, he will stand trial at Melfort Court of Queen’s Bench.
