A former president of the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies will be honoured by the University of Saskatchewan early next month.

Ray Ahenakew will be receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws degree during the university’s Spring Convocation on June 1st.

In addition to being an SIIT president The 73 year-old from Ahtakakoop First Nation led a Meadow Lake Tribal Council team that pioneered self-government negotiations with the federal government.

A university spokesperson says Ahenakew has spent a lifetime breaking down barriers to improve the lives of First Nations people.

Ahenakew says being honoured by the university is meaningful because “education breaks down barriers.”

Ahenakew will be one of six honourary degree recipients, which also include child welfare advocate Cindy Blackstock and First Nations Bank CEO Keith Martell.
