Major improvements are coming to the Stony Rapids Airport.
The government of Saskatchewan will spend 3 million dollars to develop a new access road to the community and expand the existing apron at the airport.
The airport is the only year round access to the communities of Stony Rapids and Black Lake.
In conjunction with this work, federal funding of $7.4 million will be used to improve the existing runway and lighting.
The community access road is also being improved to address safety concerns for cars and trucks heading in and out of the community.
Local councilor Al Sayr says he is glad to see the north getting some attention.
“And doing this it built a little bit of trust back to the government seeing that at least now they are coming to the table and they are understanding the difficulties of the north,” he says.
Highways Minister Nancy Heppner says the investment will improve the quality of life for residents and businesses in the north and will also improve safety.
