Teachers on the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation say not enough resources are being provided to teach special needs children on the reserve.
They say education is suffering, the children are falling farther behind and something needs to be done.
Last week, 10 teachers staged walkouts to draw attention to the situation at the Kistapiskaw School at Deschambault Lake.
One of the teachers who took part, who didn’t want to be identified, teaches a Grade 2 class on the reserve.
She says the special ed program is funded through the federal Aboriginal Affairs department, but she says not enough of that funding is finding its way to the school.
She says that is having a direct impact on not only the special ed students, but on the school as a whole.
“What we are having is a lot of kids misbehaving because some of them don’t have their basic skills — and they are running around the hallways and they are not getting any help.”
The teachers are pressing the band to correct the problem.
They want more certified teachers and more one-on-one time with the students.
In the meantime, there are no immediate plans to stage another walkout.
