Local residents pulled together to help the Regina Food Bank collect more than 300,000 tonnes of food over the weekend.

The annual drive is part of the Great Canadian Food Fight where cities challenge each other to see who can raise the most donations.

With its strong showing, Regina retains the title as most caring city.

Regina Food Bank CEO Steve Compton says it was a real community effort involving local churches, 29 schools, the business community, Scouts and Girl Guides and lots of volunteers.

“Well is there something special in Regina,” he asks? “We talked about this internally about our secret recipe and I think it is because we have so many different groups in the city involved.”

The non-perishable food items will last for several months but Compton says work at the food bank does not slow down.

He says they still need bread, milk and other perishable food items on a daily basis.
