A new report on aboriginal education has caught the attention of SIAST.

The school says it plans to study the joint task-force report on Improving Education and Employment Outcomes for First Nations and Metis people very carefully.

Among the recommendations in the report was a call for more cultural awareness in the education system, equal funding for Aboriginal students and partnerships involving First Nations groups, governments and institutions.

Vice-president of Academics Arnold Bolt says SIAST has worked hard to incorporate aboriginal initiatives into its core programming:

“We have what’s called an Aboriginal Student Achievement Plan that we implemented a few years ago and we have a number of people that work with regard to implementing recommendations that we have there as well so I’ve asked some of them to take a look at how we can align even more closely to the recommendation of this joint-task force.”

He adds they are already working to address some recommendations in the report like the wait-list for adult basic education.
