It looks like the courts are the only option for a new chief and council trying to gain control of the Standing Buffalo First Nation.

Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada says it is not getting involved in the situation.

Over the weekend, Roberta Soo OyWaste was elected chief along with six new band councillors.

However, the election is being called illegal by some and is not being recognized by the current chief and council, which still controls band finances.

There was a bit of a shoving match on Sunday when the new chief and council tried to change the locks on the band office.

Chief Roger Redman has called for an election this September, a couple of months earlier than originally scheduled.

Soo OyWaste says she and her group will do what is has to take political control of the First Nation.
