Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl says his department intends to fast track the building of 10 reserve schools across the country.

The minister says the construction of the schools will contribute to the government’s overall plan of stimulating the economy through infrastructure projects.

He says they want to embark on this “in a hurry” by starting work on the schools this year and finishing by next year.

Strahl says his department has held consultation meetings across the country to determine where the need is greatest.

He says Indian Affairs hasn’t selected the schools to be built yet, but it has compiled a list of potential projects based on meetings with Aboriginal leaders — so it won’t be a “political decision”.

Strahl notes three other schools will also be selected to receive major renovations.
