Smoking Ban At Band Bingo Hall Temporarily Halted

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band has decided to reverse a smoking ban at one of its bingo halls for the next three months.

Band spokesman Kevin Roberts says the Keethanow North Bingo Hall has seen attendance and revenues drop substantially since the band voluntarily made all its indoor facilities smoke-free last year.

Roberts says the band can’t afford to have the operation go under, since it provides money for a lot of local social agencies the government won’t fund.

He says the band council didn’t want to re-introduce smoking at the hall, but felt it had no choice.

Band leaders will review the attendance numbers and profits at the bingo hall in November after the pilot project is over.

The three-month trial phase began on Monday.
