Saskatchewan Reserves Getting Cash For Housing

The federal government has announced millions of dollars in new funding for on-reserve housing in Saskatchewan.

The government has committed $400 million for reserve housing across Canada over the next two years — and $60 million of that sum will go to Saskatchewan First Nations.

Only Ontario and Manitoba reserves have received a greater combined total of funds.

The government says the money will help with immediate housing needs, as well as with the transition to market-based housing on reserves.

Ottawa also hopes the funds serve as an economic stimulus for many First Nations by generating employment.

The funding was set aside in the Conservative government’s budget earlier this year.
