A young member of the Ahtahkakoop First Nation says she won’t soon forget a recent trip to two Nazi concentration camps in Poland.

Bonnie Masuskapoe toured the camps as part of an international student leadership mission conducted at the end of May.

Masuskapoe admits the experience scared her, as the images of what the prisoners had to live in were appalling.

She also says the experience made her reflect on similarities she’s heard exist between the camps and some of Canada’s residential schools:

Masuskapoe says she knows some of her fellow travelers were aware she hailed from the same reserve as David Ahenakew, the former AFN leader who made headlines with his support of Hitler’s views.

However, she says the topic did not come up in conversation.
