Residential School Victims Stymied By Government

A First Nations leader in the province says he’s hearing too many stories of residential school survivors whose attendance records have been lost by the government.

FSIN Vice-Chief Lyle Whitefish is calling on those survivors to step forward.

Whitefish says the federation has experts standing by who can work with the survivors to make sure their claim is accepted by the government.

He explains the FSIN recently got a letter from Ottawa, informing the federation that more records were needed for at least 10 per cent of the claims submitted so far.

Officials with the FSIN say survivors still have a couple of years to get their claim processed by the government — but the sooner it happens the better.
