Residential School Victims Still Denied Payments

The director of the National Residential School Survivors’ Society says not enough attention is being paid to the high number of survivors who still haven’t received their compensation cheques.

Ted Quewezance says many people get defensive these days when survivors ask tough questions, but politicians need to hear them.

Quewezance says of the 94,000 claims submitted so far, just 67,000 have been processed.

He notes many of the problems trace back to missing documents.

Quewezance says many members of the public mistakenly seem to think the issue has been settled and survivors have nothing to complain about.

Quewezance also feels the compensation process has been designed for lawyers, and not the grassroots citizens who are unsuccessfully trying to gather information over the phone.
