A monument was unveiled in Beauval this morning in memory of 19 young residential school students that lost their lives in a fire 78 years ago.

The late-night fire engulfed the boys’ dormitory at the old Beauval Residential School on the night of September 19th, 1927.

The victims were between the ages of 7 and 12, and hailed from West Side communities like Canoe Lake and Dillon.

Their names are engraved on a monument that now sits at the site of where the school used to stand.

Those attending this morning’s unveiling ceremony heard a history of the school, as well as stories from elders, former students and surviving family members of the victims.

Those on hand also marked the grand opening of the new Mission Hill Elementary School.
