Neil Stonechild’s mother has given the Saskatoon Police Commission until October to reach a compensation settlement with her family.
According to a report in the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, Stella Bignell is promising to sue the police commission if it doesn’t come through with a settlement by her deadline.
Bignell says her patience with the commission is wearing thin, especially since it’s been nine months since the release of a damning inquiry report into her son’s death.
Inquiry head Justice David Wright concluded in that report that the Aboriginal teenager was in police custody the night he froze to death on the outskirts of Saskatoon in November 1990.
Wright also determined the police investigation that followed was shoddy.
Stonechild’s family is reportedly looking for a six-figure settlement and a written apology.
