Province Asked to Support Young Northern Athletes

The provincial government has been asked to be a partner in a proposed multi-million-dollar northern recreation fund.

Culture, Youth and Recreation minister Joan Beatty was briefed about the proposal at this week’s Aboriginal Sport Development conference in Saskatoon.

Under the proposal, money for the fund would come from various levels of government and industry partners.

Beatty says it’s too early to say if the province would be able to contribute to the fund, but she admits young northern athletes are falling through the cracks because of a lack of programming.

As it turns out, this dialogue is taking place just ahead of a gathering about northern recreation issues in La Ronge next month.

Beatty says it’s time to take a hard look at how sport and recreation programming is currently delivered in the North.
