A sergeant with the Prince Albert police service says he believes the Conservative Government’s new anti-gang legislation will act as a deterrent to new members.

Bill Chow says it’s clear something needed to be done as gang-activity is plaguing many parts of the prairies.

Under the terms of the new legislation, any homicides committed with gang-ties would automatically be treated as first-degree murder.

Chow says the proposed legislation is a good step towards cracking down on a serious problem.

The legislation still has to be passed by parliament to become law, however so far it seems to enjoy widespread support.
