Northern Village Wants Fire Base to Stay

Some local residents in Uranium City are urging the provincial government to keep their fire-base open.

Dean Classen, who is the chair-person of the village council, says a fire earlier this year came dangerously close to the community’s edges and he doesn’t know what would have happened if the local fire-crew hadn’t responded.

The government has talked recently about its desire to move the workers over to Stony Rapids. However Classen says that doesn’t make any sense.

Classen adds the loss of five workers in the village would be devastating economically as well considering only about one hundred residents still live there.

He is now calling on Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger to lobby on their behalf.
