Northern Projects For At-Risk Families Get Funding

A number of northern groups are getting provincial funding for projects that assist vulnerable children, youth and families.

The provincial government is spending $2 million on those types of initiatives this year.

Just over $35,000 was committed earlier this week to northern projects like the Northern Physical Activity Week and a family resiliency project spearheaded by the Children North Early Childhood Intervention program.

There has been a lot of talk recently at the federal level about the best way to deal with crime, and Northern Affairs minister Joan Beatty feels this sort of preventative approach is the way to go.

Beatty is glad her constituency gets to benefit from the Community Initiatives Fund.

She says she wishes governments could do more of this sort of thing, but notes higher priorities like health and education usually chew up most of the budget.
