Northern Ministers Gather In The Pas

Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger is in The Pas today to meet with his counterparts from across the country.

Northern development ministers have been holding their annual get-together on the Opaskawayak Cree Nation reserve for the last few days.

Belanger says it’s a great way to share ideas and to present a unified front when lobbying the federal government.

As an example, Belanger says federal officials are often questioned if measures taken in the territories could be applied in northern areas of the provinces.

Federal Indian and Northern Affairs Minister Andy Scott took part in the discussions yesterday, but Belanger says it doesn’t sound like his colleagues’ call for a northern transportation strategy made much headway.

The gathering wraps up later today.
