New Status Card Clears Another Hurdle

A director with Indian Affairs says a new enhanced Indian status card could be ready by next spring.
The card will be outfitted with the latest technology to prevent counterfeiting and fraud.
Ray Hatfield says they have submitted the prototype of the card to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which has tentatively given it its approval.
Hatfield says they’re hoping to have the cards ready for the June 2009 deadline when Canadians will need passports or other recognized travel documents to enter the U.S.
However, he says band members will have to apply for them.
They will be able to do that through a regional INAC office.
