Saskatchewan’s Northern Affairs minister says achievement awards and recognition nights for Aboriginal children in elementary schools should be adopted across the province.

Joan Beatty attended the 2006 First Nations Elementary Achievement Awards last night in Regina and says the ceremony was a great way for the children to receive recognition for their hard work.

Beatty notes many Aboriginal children have obstacles to overcome in their lives, and the children honoured last night overcame hardships while maintaining a great attitude and excelling in school.

Beatty says this type of event shows the children that they can be proud of their achievements, which in turn, provides the child with a sense of self-esteem and confidence to succeed in life.

The children, ranging from Kindergarten through Grade 8, were nominated by their teachers and principals from Regina elementary schools.
