An RCMP officer formerly stationed in La Ronge has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman while she was in custody.

Cst. Thierry Jacques will also have his name on the national sex offender registry for 20 years.

The 32-year-old Jacques was found guilty by a judge last week of taking the woman from her cell and sexually assaulting her in the garage at the La Ronge RCMP detachment on September 4th, 2004.

Key evidence at the trial focused on semen stains found on a shirt the woman was wearing the night of the assault, and the fact it matched Jacques’ DNA.

His lawyer had argued Jacques’ semen ended up on the shirt during a previous consensual sexual encounter with the woman at his apartment.
