How Aboriginal people can best be involved in economic development is being discussed this week in Saskatoon.

The Montreal Lake Cree Nation is hosting the Canadian Aboriginal Business and Economic Development Forum.

Roger Bird, chief of Montreal Lake, says the main reason he wanted to take on the expense of hosting such a conference was to find ways to deal with his own reserve’s high levels of unemployment.

Bird believes partnerships are the way to go.

He says he purposely left duty-to-consult off of the agenda because he wanted people to network with each other, rather than get bogged down in debate about the often contentious issue.

The conference has speakers from the public and private sectors, as well as educational institutes.
