The Montreal Lake Cree Nation has announced it plans to halt commercial fishing on Montreal Lake over the next three years.

Chief Lionel Bird says the local fishers’ co-op came to the decision at a meeting last night after looking at declining walleye numbers.

Bird says the co-op also plans to conduct a yearly review on fish numbers during the ban, while at the same time, look for new ways of replenishing stocks.

Bird notes that traditional and subsistence uses of the fish will still be allowed.

He also says the provincial government has lowered walleye catch limits on the lake.

He’s confident the new measures will allow fish stocks to return to acceptable levels.
