Montreal Lake Chief Quitting Politics

There will be a new person in charge at the Montreal Lake Cree Nation after next week’s band election.

Incumbent chief Richie Bird has decided not to seek another term.

Nomination meetings were held earlier this week.

Bird has had to deal with several trying circumstances during his time as chief, including the recent triple homicide in Montreal Lake, the Baby Andy case and the time his reserve was threatened by a forest fire.

Unofficially, three people are running for chief in Montreal Lake — Lionel A. Bird, Roy W. Ross and Shirley S. Henderson.

The band election in Montreal Lake takes place this coming Monday.
