The mayor of Meadow Lake believes that that having his community join the ranks of cities in Saskatchewan, should carry some benefits.

City status will officially be conferred after the community’s first post-election council meeting on Nov. 9.

Mayor Darwin Obrigewitsch is hopeful city status will make it easier for the community to attract doctors and nurses.

The mayor says city status won’t be a financial drain on Meadow Lake, because communities don’t have to pay more for services such as policing until they have a much larger population.

Cities don’t generally hire their own police service until their population hits 15,000 or more.
