The Lac La Ronge Indian Band is mourning the loss of one of its former leaders.

Senator James Myles Venne passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, after a long illness at the age of 89.

He served as Chief of the band for 15 years and was instrumental in starting up many economic ventures, including Northern Resource Trucking.

He also lobbied hard for the formation of schools on each of the band’s main communities.

Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Lawrence Joseph says it’s a great loss.

Senator Venne was appointed to the FSIN Senate in 1989 and to the band’s council of elders ten years later.

He was also a Reverend Canon in the Anglican Church.

Wake services will begin at 5 pm Friday at the JRMCC Hall on Far Reserve, with a service to be held at 8 pm.

An open funeral for the public will be held at the JRMCC Hall on Saturday morning at 10 am, followed by a private service for family members at 2 pm at the All Saints Anglican Church in La Ronge.
