Concerns over workload and safety prompted workers at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and Willow Cree Healing Lodge to walk off the job yesterday.

The workers, mainly parole officers, office workers and maintenance staff say Ottawa is ignoring their demands for more help on the job.

Union spokesman Barry Stolar says workers are often scared to go on holidays because there is no one to replace them.

Stolar adds maintenance workers often have trouble fixing some of the equipment because it’s so old. About 16 workers in all were involved in the pickets yesterday.
