Members of Saskatchewan’s Peepeekisis First Nation and other bands covered by Treaty 4 have a chance to hear from an expert on international law this weekend.

International law advisor and author Janice Switlo will speak on treaty issues, including governance, at the Regina-area reserve this weekend.

According to Switlo, the “post-apology era” is a huge opportunity for First Nations because non-Aboriginal people are starting to understand what Aboriginal people went through.

She says that is creating a great opportunity to move forward on self-governance.

Switlo also says First Nations should always speak in the present tense about who they are and how they govern.

She adds, that way, they’re showing they never gave up the right to govern themselves.
