INAC Official Questioned About Education Grants

The education director for Indian Affairs is shedding more light on why the department’s post-secondary education program is under review.

Kathleen Keenan says it’s not clear whether the students who most need the funding are getting it, what results are being achieved through the funding, and whether enough of them on-reserve know about it.

In addition to that, she says, a recent audit also questions the effectiveness of the program.

Keenan says she is not sure how long the review will take.

The review has raised concerns among many First Nations leaders, because they fear Indian Affairs is considering transforming education grants into loans.

Keenan was speaking this morning before a senate committee in Ottawa.
