Homeless Sandy Bay Woman Optimistic

A 23-year-old Sandy Bay woman who made headlines a few weeks ago with a housing protest says her situation is looking up.

Linda Beatty moved herself and her 3 children into a tent on an empty lot to protest the lack of housing in her community.

She eventually moved into an ice fishing shack when the weather turned colder, and is now staying in the local youth centre trailer — thanks to the help of some local politicians.

Beatty says she’s not out of the woods yet, but she feels she’s getting hopeful signs from local housing officials about the possibility of getting a home of her own.

Beatty says she’s one of 9 people on the short list for 4 or 5 homes that will become available later this month.

A provincial housing spokesman has already said Beatty’s demonstration will not affect her chances of landing a home.
