Gary Tinker Federation To Celebrate Anniversary

An anniversary celebration begins in La Ronge tonight for a disabled rights activist and the advocacy group he created.

Gary Tinker first gained the public’s attention when he walked to Regina from La Ronge in 1989.

Afflicted with cerebral palsy, Tinker used the walk to raise awareness about the lack of services for disabled people in the North.

Since that time, his group — the Gary Tinker Federation — has lobbied hard to increase the number of job opportunities that are open to disabled residents.

Coordinator George Ward says he’s proud of the work the federation has done over the last 15 years.

Festivities get underway tonight at the La Ronge Motor Hotel with a wine and cheese party.

A conference and awards banquet run tomorrow.
