Fur Buyer Calls For More Government Involvement

The owner of a northern fur-buying outfit says the provincial government isn’t doing enough to reap the benefits of the trapping industry.

Darrell Barr runs a private operation in La Ronge.

He says the government needs to put some money into the industry at a local level.

For instance, he notes most of the fur harvested in the North is exported to the U.S., where it is turned into items like hats.

He says there is no reason why the provincial government couldn’t make the same thing happen here in Saskatchewan.

Barr also feels the government could do more with trapper training programs that are already in place.
