The chief of the Canoe Lake First Nation says, like many in the Aboriginal community, he was shocked to learn of the sudden passing of a young First Nations lawyer from his community.

Jake Tootoosis died unexpectedly in Saskatoon this past weekend at the age of 42.

Chief Guy Lariviere says he was a role model for youth on his reserve — and often took on cases in the First Nations community on a pro bono basis.

Lariviere says First Nations leaders really appreciated his legal knowledge about the treaties.

Tootoosis’ funeral is being held today in Canoe Lake.
