Election Delays Funding Request for Fish Plant

Construction of a fish plant in Prince Albert remains on hold — at least until the provincial election is over.

The president of Saskatchewan Cooperative Fisheries Limited, John Carriere, says the current political uncertainty means the chances of securing immediate financial backing for the project are not good. However, he says things should pick up once the new government is elected.

Carriere points out that organizers had hoped to begin building the plant this fall, but he says that seems unlikely unless the phone starts ringing in the next few days.

Carriere believes it will take at least three major backers to provide the capital dollars they’re looking for.

He says the slow process has been a frustrating one, but he’s confident the money will be found and fishers

will eventually have a new plant to send their catch to.
