Two northern First Nations will be holding chief and council elections over the next couple of days.

Members of the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation will head to the polls today.

Joyce Cantre, Nancy Demarais, Frank Kytwayhat, Ray Mitsuing and Jimmy Partridge are all vying for the position of chief, which was remained vacant since former chief Helen Ben was elected the tribal chief of the Meadow Lake Tribal Council over a year ago.

There are a total of four incumbents and 26 new faces running for five positions on the band council.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo River Dene Nation in Dillon will hold its band election tomorrow.

Incumbent chief Louie Chanalquay is hoping to hold off a challenge from former chief Elmer Campbell.

A total of 16 candidates are running for council. All five incumbents are seeking re-election.
