Elder Questions Benefits of Industry

A Pelican Narrows elder who remembers growing up in the community during the 1930s says he wishes more could be done to limit the harmful effects of industrial activity in the area.

Phillip Ratt says he always felt the community would have an abundance of things like fresh water, but lately has noticed even that doesn’t seem to measure up to years past.

Ratt says he can remember when the first road was built to Pelican Narrows during the late 1960s and it seemed to him then that the community changed overnight because of it.

Ratt admits industries like mining bring a lot of jobs and money to the area, but wonders sometimes if it’s worth it.
