The village hall in Cumberland House will be the setting tonight for a meeting involving local Aboriginal citizens wanting to join a new political organization.

The Aboriginal Affairs Coalition of Saskatchewan, which is affiliated with the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, is attempting to launch an affiliate in the community that will represent people living off-reserve.

Coalition board member Ian Fosseneuve says the new group is called the Cumberland House Territorial Community Organization and is aimed at giving local people a voice.

Fosseneuve feels too many grassroots citizens living in Cumberland House are not being properly represented by existing Aboriginal governments or organizations.

He says the group will be steered by local members while retaining some ties to the provincial body.

Fosseneuve says the group wants to take responsibility for improving living conditions for everyone.
