A North Battleford high school principal says vandalism has been cut sharply since his school encouraged students to paint murals on school walls.

Colin Sutherland is principal of Sakewew High School, an Aboriginal high school in the Battlefords.

Sutherland says before the murals were painted, the school suffered a lot of vandalism.

He says holes were punched in the walls and gang symbols were scrawled on them.

But Sutherland says that’s not happening anymore because students and staff love the place and feel more at home now.

According to Sutherland, some students hang out at the school on weekends and holidays.
