The provincial government has announced new core funding for Northern Saskatchewan trappers.

Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger made the announcement over the weekend at Palmbere Days.

Belanger says the Northern Saskatchewan Trappers Association will receive 50-thousand dollars a year for the next 3 years.

He says trapping is still a viable northern industry, and feels the money is a worthwhile investment.

The funding will go towards things like research, marketing and a new program that’s designed to attract northern youth to the trapping industry.

Belanger also says the money will help offset the cost of the trappers’ annual convention and the travel they need to do to lobby other interest groups.

The 150-thousand dollars is a little less than the 225-thousand Belanger indicated earlier this spring might be coming to trappers. Belanger says it was decided that it would be better for trappers to receive the same amount of funding commercial fishers were given.
