A protocol to streamline the La Ronge Alternative Measures Program was signed today.

The ceremony at the Lac La Ronge Indian Band council chambers involved several government ministries, the RCMP and band officials.

Saskatchewan Justice program director Larry Henry says the initiative deals with minor offences which can be kept out of the court system.

Henry says the program only applies to first-time offenders, and it is up to the police or Crown prosecutors to identify which offences qualify.

He notes they typically deal with minor break and enters, thefts, and mischief cases.

Henry adds the process also involves the victims of minor crimes.
