A long-time mayor of La Ronge has been acclaimed as the Saskatchewan Party candidate in the northern Saskatchewan riding of Cumberland.

Joe Hordyski was the town’s mayor for 12 years before deciding last year not to seek re-election in order to pursue provincial politics.

Hordyski unsuccessfully attempted to secure the nomination prior to the last election, but lost out to Dale McAuley.

Hordyski says, as a businessman, the Saskatchewan Party’s emphasis on free enterprise was what drew him to that party — adding he believes that is what is necessary to increase the quality of life in the province’s north.

The Cumberland riding is currently represented by NDP MLA Doyle Vermette.

The consitutency has been an NDP stronghold for several decades, but Hordyski believes residents are ready for a change.
