A northern Saskatchewan leader says it will be up to local residents to help remedy some of the justice problems plaguing the north.

New North chair and Buffalo Narrows mayor Bobby Woods says he looks forward to this week’s Northern Justice Symposium in Prince Albert.

Many experts and officials are slated to attend the three-day event.

However, Woods says the north can’t rely on outsiders to fix the various problems — the solutions will have to come from within.

Issues scheduled to be covered over the next few days include interpersonal violence, gangs, and how to start community police boards.

Woods notes the north could do with some more volunteers when it comes to establishing the new boards — as well as greater understanding about their role.

The keynote speaker for this week’s event is Cree court judge Gerald Morin.
