The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is applying for another grant to salvage burned-out trees in its traditional territory.

Chief Darrel McCallum says the band is happy with jobs created through a partnership with Vermette Wood Preservers.

Last September, the federal government gave the First Nation nearly $1.8 million to employ 55 full-time workers.

The band members salvaged burned-out trees, helping transform them into fence posts for export to the United States.

McCallum says much good came out of the project, including the training of band citizens who have now moved on to other jobs in the forestry sector.

Thousands of fence posts were created through the work.
